What a lottery jackpot pays you per day

The big number on the sign is not what lands in your bank. I built this so you can see how a Powerball jackpot is really paid: the yearly annuity, the cash option, and what federal tax can take.

$
%

The 42.1% default comes from the 21 Oct 2026 Powerball draw: $635 million jackpot, $267.5 million cash value. It changes from draw to draw.

Annuity: on average, before tax $0 a day
$0first payment
$0last payment

Before and after federal tax
Before taxAfter 37% federal
Annuity, all 30 payments$0$0
Annuity, average a day$0$0
Cash option, one payment$0$0

Powerball pays the annuity as one payment now, then 29 yearly payments, each 5% bigger than the last. Tax: 24% federal is withheld from lottery wins over $5,000, but the top federal rate is 37%, so a big winner can owe more at tax time. The "after" column takes 37% off everything, a rough worst case, since lower rates apply to the first part of income. State tax is not included.
